My laptop's vent is on the side so those laptop cooling fan things won't work. What I want to know is if I can use a typical household fan to cool it down by having it blowing directly towards it.

Maybe you can install software to check your computer's temperature with and without a fan to see if it makes a difference. As long as you're not blowing dust or debris into your laptop, a house fan shouldn't hurt at the very least.
