Hello, my name is Talia. Welcome to the neighbourhood!
I am excited to be a part of the new JFSA Neighbourhood Connections program, which connects seniors with volunteers in their neighbourhoods. Neighbourhood-based volunteers are available to respond to seniors’ requests for assistance with one-off tasks or errands, like picking up and delivering a wheelchair to a senior who is home-bound, accompanying a senior to purchase new shoes, or sorting through items to be donated.
As I began to distribute promotional materials for this program, I was continuously met with enthusiasm from staff at various agencies who shared stories of the numerous times they had helped seniors with these kinds of tasks simply because there were no other options. I am thrilled that the JFSA is able to provide this valuable and needed service.
I recently heard the term “micro-volunteering” and felt that it resonated with the Neighbourhood Connections program, as volunteers are asked to commit to only 1-2 hours a month. These micro-volunteering opportunities provide a way for people to donate their time despite busy schedules and lives. While taking on a 20-30 minute task doesn’t seem like much, it can make a significant difference to the lives of those requiring assistance. Having help with tasks from time to time may allow someone to maintain the ability to live independently in their home. At the same time, there is an important element of providing the opportunity for neighbours to get to know each other.
